The Pop-Up Shop Rental Assistance will provide short-term rental aid to qualifying businesses that occupy approved vacant commercial spaces on Main Street between Collins Avenue and Sixth Avenue Northwest during the Holiday Lights on Main season, according to City Business Development and Communications Director Madison Cermak. Holiday Lights on Main runs nightly from 5-10 p.m. from Nov. 27 through Jan. 7, featuring numerous lighted displays at Dykshoorn and Heritage parks. "By helping reduce startup costs, we hope to encourage creative business concepts, increase foot traffic and highlight the potential of our available downtown commercial spaces." The Mandan Growth Fund committee proposed a $15,000 expenditure to fund the program, which would provide rental assistance equal to 50% of the participating businesses' monthly rent, up to a maximum of $7 per square foot per month for a threemonth lease term. The program's funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis until the $15,000 allocation is exhausted, according to Cermak. She and her staff identified around a dozen vacant suites and storefronts on Main Street. Cermak said property owners with vacancies on avenues off Main Street would also be able to apply. Participating businesses must maintain minimum operating hours of 4-9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays during the Holiday Lights on Main season. Additionally, applicants must negotiate and execute leases directly with property owners and provide all business documentation, North Dakota sales and use tax permits, Secretary of State registration verification, and proof of insurance. "Between the Friday after Thanksgiving and Jan. 9, we figure roughly 60,000 (people) visit the lights, so it's quite the opportunity for somebody who wants to temporarily get their toes wet, more or less," Mandan Mayor Jim Froelich said.
